Since their construction in the 1930's, they've been called a lot of things...
Nonehshe, The Antlers, Intimate Inns, Kokanee Kabins and West-a-While, with ownership in the names of Herman, Nolan, Kroll, Doehrer (they owned and ran the Chuck Hole Restaurant), DeKoevend, (big theatre supporters who, during Grand Lake's more rustic past, allowed the theatre troupe to shower at their cabins when the troupe's housing had no such facilities), Hillier, (she sold real estate and he worked at the lumber yard), Hurley (he owned the lumber yard), Riegel (each cabin had its own hot tub during their tenure), Latham and finally, Richard and Pat Farmer from whom Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre bought the cabins in 1999.
But since 1999, they've been called OFF-BROADWAY... and more importantly, "HOME" to the actors, musicians and staff of the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre. Located only three blocks from the theatre, the Off-Broadway complex, consisting of one main house and seven cabins cozily houses RMRT's talented professional actors, musicians and staff, some of whom have never seen a real live mountain - - never mind a real live mountain town.
Off-Broadway Cabins are "adopted" by Grand Lake families who lovingly clean, polish, wash and wax in anticipation of the arrival of their kids. It is not at all unusual to see RMRT's Board of Trustees and the Friends of the Rep raking up pine needles, planting pansies and inspecting roofs. They endeavor to create a three month home, away from home, for these young people who possess such energy and talent and who, undeniably, improve the quality of life for residents of Grand County and its visitors.
Only three years ago, what seemed to be an insurmountable mortgage on our Off Broadway Cabins loomed large in the financial life of the RMRT. We began a capital campaign dubbed ENCORE! to erase that mortgage from the books and on August 17, 2006, RMRT Trustee Emeritus Betty Dick, former Board President Marilou Randall and Executive Director Carol Wolff lit a match and that mortgage went up in smoke!
Your generosity has demonstrated your confidence in the RMRT and freed up what was a nearly $40,000 annual debt service only 3 1/2 years ago. Thanks to each and every one of you who believed it could happen and then made it happen!
What will ENCORE! accomplish next? Stay tuned - - - -
